Tell the difference between hydrating and nourishing your skin

If you think face oils hydrate your skin, then you've come to the right place 😉 Learn to distinguish between hydration and nourishment to build a face routine tailored to your skin type and regain a radiant complexion ✨ !

What is hydration?

Hydrating literally means "providing water." When this word is used in cosmetics, it indicates that a product increases the water percentage in the epidermis, thanks to ingredients called humectants. Aloe vera, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, provitamin B5, urea, and beta-glucan are among the humectants known for their effectiveness. They work by retaining moisture around them.

For the vast majority of us, our skin needs topical hydration to be healthy. There are several products that provide hydration to the skin – among the most popular are serums and creams, which are often rich in hydrating active ingredients. The advantage of moisturizing creams is that they are emulsions composed of both an aqueous phase and an oily phase.

The oily phase is very useful for complementing and maintaining hydration. It generally contains several fatty substances like vegetable oils and butters: these are emollients that create a protective layer on the skin's surface, thereby limiting water loss. They also help to nourish, soften, and repair the skin barrier.

A moisturizing cream is therefore, by definition, a dual-action product that simultaneously helps hydrate the skin and prevent dehydration.

Know your skin type

To choose the right products for your specific needs, it's important to precisely identify your skin type and its specific concerns, which are fundamentally different. If you don't yet know your skin type or are hesitating between two, here are several undeniable indicators:

Oily skin: My face shines by late morning, with very visible pores in certain areas.

Combination skin: Some areas of my face shine by late morning (especially the T-zone) with some dry areas (like the cheeks).

Normal skin: My skin feels comfortable all day long, with variations depending on the seasons: dry patches in winter and shine in summer.

Dry skin: I feel tightness by late morning and regularly need to reapply a cream to feel comfortable, especially in winter. My pores are completely invisible.

In addition to your skin type, several possible concerns can arise: imperfections, hyperpigmentation, sensitivities, rosacea... and notably dehydration! Urban skin is very generally prone to this due to the multiple external aggressions it faces. It manifests as the appearance of fine lines around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks, as well as a dull complexion and an abnormal lack of bounce.

Thus, oily skin will not need more nourishment, but will undoubtedly need an optimal dose of daily hydration. As for dry skin, applying an oil or a nourishing balm after the moisturizing cream will do it a world of good.

The essential steps of a good face routine

Adopting a face routine and sticking to it every day is THE key to healthy skin. Remember at least the following 4 steps to take care of your skin simply and effectively without fuss:

Make-up removal
The first step is to dissolve makeup and/or the sunscreen layer if you are wearing any. Cleansing oils and balms are particularly effective while being respectful of the hydrolipidic film, unlike micellar waters.

Cleansing
To remove the last impurities and achieve completely clean skin, it is essential to use a cleanser every evening. Choose cleansers with mild foaming agents that will not leave a feeling of tightness.

Exfoliation
2 to 3 times a week, preferably in the evening, exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and accelerate cell regeneration. Opt for a gentle exfoliant to avoid irritation, based on fruit acids, enzymes, or very fine powders.

Hydration
Apply a moisturizing cream directly after cleansing or exfoliation to prevent dehydration. Make sure your cream contains several types of humectants for a guaranteed plump effect!
